Nitrous Oxide in Atlanta, GA

Do you ever feel nervous about visiting the dentist? Does your upcoming treatment make you feel anxious? If so, you may benefit from nitrous oxide (N2O) sedation at our office. Nitrous oxide, also known as laughing gas, is a nitrogen-oxygen mixture that you inhale through a nose mask during your treatment. As you breathe in the nitrous oxide, you will experience a relaxed or even euphoric sensation.

Nitrous oxide can help you feel calm and at ease throughout your treatment. Nitrous oxide sedation is very safe: the effects will wear off within just a few minutes after we remove your nose mask, and you can legally and safely drive yourself home after your appointment.

When to Use Conscious Sedation for Dentistry

Nitrous oxide is a good option for any of our patients who suffer from dental anxiety or dental phobia. If you feel anxious because you are receiving a treatment you have not experienced before, or if you dislike the sounds and sights of the dental office, we may recommend nitrous oxide to help you feel more relaxed.

Some patients have a sensitive gag reflex, which can make dental procedures uncomfortable. Nitrous oxide can help relax the gag reflex, making the treatment easier for both the patient and the dentist. Furthermore, complex procedures, such as root canals, may require the use of nitrous oxide to keep the patient relaxed and cooperative.

Patients who have difficulty sitting still for extended periods, such as children or those with certain medical conditions, may benefit from nitrous oxide to help them remain calm and sit still during treatment. Sedation dentistry can aid many different patients while at our office.

Be certain to discuss your concerns with our dentist and team before your visit so we can help you feel more comfortable during your treatment.

What Causes Dental Anxiety?

For patients with dental anxiety, it can seem frustrating or even embarrassing. However, dental anxiety is a common condition that has a variety of causes, including:

Past Traumatic Experiences: Previous traumatic experiences at the dentist, especially during childhood, can have a lasting impact on a person’s perception of dental visits. Negative memories or pain during childhood dental visits can lead to long-term anxiety.

Loss of Control: Sitting in a dental chair and having someone working in your mouth can create a feeling of loss of control for some people. This lack of control over the situation can lead to anxiety.

Fear of Judgement: Some people feel embarrassed about the condition of their teeth or being judged by the dentist or dental staff. As a result, it can create anxiety about dental visits.

Negative Media Portrayals: Media depictions of dental visits or procedures as painful, scary, or unpleasant can reinforce existing fears or create new ones for those who are already anxious.

Lack of Understanding: Not understanding the procedure being performed or feeling uninformed about what to expect during the dental visit can lead to anxiety.
