When Do You Need a Tooth Extraction?

Several conditions may necessitate tooth extraction. Among these are:

Advanced Gum Disease: Severe infection that can destroy a significant portion of the tooth and supporting bone structure. Periodontal (gum) disease can cause the supporting tissues and bone around a tooth to deteriorate. This can lead to loose teeth. If the condition progresses to the point where a tooth is not stable, we may need to perform an extraction to prevent the spread of infection.

Severe Tooth Decay: Serious decay that can damage a tooth beyond repair. As a result, it can make a successful restoration impossible. When tooth decay is extensive and has affected a significant portion of the tooth, it may not be possible to save the tooth with a filling or crown.

Crowded or Misaligned Teeth: Crowding can make it difficult for your teeth to fit in the mouth properly. In some cases of severe crowding or misalignment, extracting one or more teeth can create space for orthodontic treatment, such as braces.

Trauma or Injury: Teeth that are severely fractured, cracked, or otherwise damaged due to trauma or injury may need extraction if we cannot repair them.

Infection or Abscess: A tooth with an untreated infection or abscess can cause severe pain, swelling, and potential systemic health risks without treatment. In these cases, you may need an extraction to remove the source of the infection.

Before deciding on a tooth extraction, our team will thoroughly evaluate the tooth and discuss your options. Preserving natural teeth is preferred whenever possible, but in necessary situations, it is essential to prevent further complications.
